From January 2026, the new NZ building rules mean granny flats up to 70m² can be built without full building consent, making the process faster and more affordable than ever before. The new laws require adherence to a specific set of requirements in order to meet the granny flat exemption. Some dwellings, while they may be under 70m², might not fall under the exemption.
